Open chords where a common open shape exists (C, D, E, G, A and their minors) and barre or movable shapes for the rest. An × above a string means don’t play it, a circle means play it open, and a bar across the strings is a barre held with one finger. The number beside a box, such as 4fr, is the fret it starts on.

How to read guitar chord diagrams
Each diagram is the guitar neck seen head-on: the six vertical lines are the strings, the horizontal lines are the frets, dots show where to press, a circle means play the string open, and an × means don’t play it. Want to write your own shapes? Try the blank chord charts, read how to read guitar tab, or learn the notes on the fretboard.
Playing with a capo? The capo chart shows which chord each shape sounds on every fret. To see which of these chords belong together in a key, use the chord progression chart.
